We have been contacted by many wives of business owners that will ask questions about how Internet marketing works and if it would work for their husband’s small business. We usually give them some ideas to work on and they will tell us:

“But he won’t do any of them”.

The only answer to this is:

“What is stopping you?”

Someone needs to take control of the situation and see that obstacles are overcome. That is how business works and sometimes it is a spouse, friend, or relative that can lend the helping hand.

Make no mistake it is best if you take control of your business. Don’t let something as important as web design and Internet marketing fall by the wayside. Learn what you can about Internet marketing and try for yourself. If you have a hard time keeping up with it, HIRE SOMEONE. We spend our career’s learning all about it. I couldn’t imagine doing everything we do to ensure a successful marketing campaign and doing the work on top of it. (That’s why I have an accountant, insurance agent, banker etc.) Nobody can do it all. Control your business.

Step 3: Build your Brand.

Goal: Be the best at what you do and show it off on your web site. Brand your small business with what makes the small business great. Do you have great employees? Show them off! Do you have great equipment? Show it off! Use images from your business and place them on your web site branding your company with what makes you great. Have you ever looked at a company’s web site and gone to the place of business only to find out it was nothing like it looked online? It isn’t a good first impression.

Brand your company as the most knowledgeable people in the business by placing vital information about what it is you do or sell on your web site. Consumers are becoming do it yourselfers and are looking for information that will educate them about a topic. Wouldn’t it be best to brand your small business as the ones that have the answer’s. Wouldn’t it also be helpful to provide information about why it is best to hire a professional to do the task? After all education can teach how to do something but experience teaches us how to do it safely and how to do it the right way the first time. Sometimes the cost of the mistake is greater than the cost of hiring a pro like you.

Step 4: Consistency

Many people are looking for magic pills or a magic buttons to achieve their goals. The harder the goals the more pills and buttons they will try. A one and done strategy is never a good one for a small business owner. Be consistent with your web site content. Business is always evolving so keep potential customers updated on what is changing. Your web site needs constant attention and too many small business owners either pay for a quick fix (that usually fail) or neglect it all together wasting their initial investment (time and money). Either keep it up or hire someone to do it for you. If you don’t your competition will.

Step 5: Do not accept failure.

First off, in some industries the hard to hear truth is that the longer you wait to make your investment into your company’s web site the greater that investment will be. Your competition is most likely already marketing online and the longer you wait the more time and effort will be needed to get your small business web site where it needs to be so that it generates traffic. And as we all know, time is money.

The good news is that IT CAN BE DONE!

5 Steps to small business web design and Internet marketing success:

First, if you are a business owner and you’re here to learn how to market your business successfully online I want to thank you for at least acknowledging you need to. It is still a common thing to find small business owners that have not come to the realization that online marketing is an important element of their small business marketing plan.

Step 1: Take action to escape from Internet marketing prison. Don’t fear your web site.

What’s in your head? Do you see things and think, I need a picture of that for my web site? Do you think about ways to use technology to work smarter? Do you spend time thinking about ways to be better than your competition? Could you even tell me why you are better? Which one of the following are you?

The Internet marketing prisoner:

I can’t.

“I don’t understand computers.”

Feelings of resentment towards their competition.

“I hate those guys they must be cheating.”

Desire for sympathy.

“My business was better before the Internet.”

Dwelling on it’s not fair.

“It’s not fair that I don’t show up in Google.”

Acceptance.

“This is just the way things are these days.”

I’ll do it tomorrow.

“I’ll get around to it.”

Withdrawal.

“Nah we don’t use that Internet stuff.”

Depression.

“I’ll never understand how to make a web site or get my name out there. I used to love my business.”

Desire for accomplishment.

“I want to convert more sales from my web site traffic.”

Search for opportunities.

“I always find time to write about or take a picture of something that shows off my business.”

Invention.

“I always think of new ways to use technology to make my business work smarter.”

Do it now!

“I need to create momentum now and keep it going.”

Celebration.

“We show off how much we love doing our job on our web site.”

It is time to escape. Trust me there are no stupid questions about your web site or web design. There are only stupid people that don’t ask questions because it hurts their ego. Think about it this way; imagine all the potential customers you are missing because you are not providing information on your web site that would answer other people’s stupid questions about your business.

Step 2: Take control of your business. Take control of your Internet marketing plan. (Fill in the blanks below.)

You will continue to be un_______ as long as you depend on others to make you _______.

The reason you are in business is because you have a product or service that someone wants or needs. While economic and other factors may limit the amount of consumers available the fact remains there are still people buying and those people are going to be more educated about your product before making the decision to purchase. Are you the one educating them? The Internet and your web site can help overcome obstacles we may think are out of our control. For example:
